We were glad to see those Vatavians that were able to make it to Crown Tournament. It was good to see HL Cai and Lord Uldin compete.
Our congratulations to HL Wulfric foe a well deserved place in Our Kingdom of Calontir as Knight. His vigil will be held during Lilies War. This gives the Barony 6 Knights to boast of.

April 2, 2008 Officers’ Meeting

April 30th, 2008

21 members attended: 16 officers/ deputies; 5 members of the populace

A moment of silence was observed for those loved ones who had passed away recently. There will be some memorial ribbons made for HL Phillipa Llyod de Tarifa to use at this coming Ren Festival.

The Renaissance Festival steward was at an Eagles Realm meeting. The deputies reported on photo booth plans and possible special fighting scenarios being considered. Festival posters and children’s passes were available at the meeting. The Champions’ have been ‘plotting’ about their event coming this summer. The arts and sciences competition has already been determined in order to allow interested people time to get projects ready. A new comers ‘Meet and Greet’/ Bush is being planned. A formal bid on that with details was requested.

This evening a request was received from Heights High School for the loan of garb and armor for their May production. Details are needed as to what exactly is needed.

Lord Connor will continue to publish the Dragonflyre until he leaves. The Chronicler thanked everyone for their kind thoughts and words through her recent loss. The Web Minister reported requests from other groups for photographs from our site for their site and for a publication.

His Lordship Batu announced the selection of a deputy Minister of Arts and Sciences, Lady Olivia MacKay. Twelve items are at Saker; four more will be sent this week.

Research into expenses for hardware and supplies for the group to publish the Dragonflyre ourselves is being obtained. Options and related issues were discussed. The information from this research is planned for presentation at next month’s officers’. It was announced that the Dragonflyre survey deadline was extended and will also be presented next month.

The Treasurer arrived late due to trains. It had been recommended to Lord Ebhan prior to her arrival that his financial questions would be better addressed in a separate meeting arranged with the Treasurer. Repair of Baronial property continues in preparation for the Festival.

The Knight Marshal stated she had officially responded to the new Earl Marshal’s inquiry about Vatavian fighting practice and activities.

The Crown has requested award recommendations. It was suggested that it might be a good idea to have them delivered to Them by Crown Tournament. Pictures or alternate names added to the form information would help Their Majesties in recognizing individuals being put forth for awards.

The Property Master announced that he would be stepping down as soon as his successor can be found and trained. Interested people who have hauling capabilities would find it an advantage to the position.

Officers were reminded that first quarter reports are due. Copies should also be sent to Their Excellencies.

The meeting adjourned.

Baronage May Newsletter A.S. XLIII

April 11th, 2008

Greetings Vatavia,

We would like to begin by offering Our condolences to all in Our baronial family who have lost loved ones. Seven have crossed over and Our thoughts and prayers go with them and the family and friends they have left behind.

The SCA has evolved technologically over the years. When Claddagh Ring “played up a storm” at Valor XIII, only one person on site possessed a satellite phone. Now, cell phones have become so common that it has to be announced before court to turn them off. Newsletters and “serf-lines” are being replaced by websites and chat rooms. But with these advances come problems. How often do you find yourself saying to someone “did you get my e-mail?” Think about it; if e-mail really was as efficient and reliable as we wish it were, we would never have to ask that question. The same goes for voice mail and text messaging. Having been members of the officer corps, both Kingdom and baronial, and now as Baronage, We can attest to the problems that arise from lost text messages, missed e-mails, and misdialed voice mails. While We certainly are supportive of DragonFly Online and of course the excellent Vatavia website, please consider something . . . , anachronistic, and talk to one another. We know where to meet each Wednesday and Sunday, so lets practice communicating face to face when we get the chance, not just screen to screen. We might find we understand each other better than before.

In order to live the dream, we have to work together.

March 5, 2008 Officers’ Meeting

March 26th, 2008

15 members attended: 13 officers/ deputies; 2 members of the populace

It was announced that Their Highnesses have requested heraldic display at Coronation- individual, group, crests, etc.

‘Meet and Greets’ after each Renaissance Festival are already being planned. A BUSH- Baronial University of Societal Humanities- is planned in conjunction with one of these. Plans for the upcoming Renaissance Festival are in process. Information is expected this week from Eagles Realm. Work days to prepare have already been held and others scheduled. More information on each Valor bid has been requested. Once received then a decision will be made.

The Chronicler requested interest groups update their information and provide any changes. The possibility of web publication of the Dragonflyre was brought up and discussed. A survey was suggested. The Seneschal will check matters related to doing this type of publication. The web site has received a disc of the Baronial Roll of Arms to add to the site. The deputy for the Minister of Arts and Sciences will be selected this month. An overhead is now available for projects.

The Chirurgeon would like to inventory the Baronial first aid kits. New items are being made and old repaired and refurbished.

Fighting continues as scheduled on Sundays, weather permitting. Some unofficial groups have been practicing on Saturdays when there have been visiting fighters.

The Seneschal stressed that local officers are required to provide contact information to their Kingdom superiors. Officers should acknowledge messages in a timely fashion even if unable to respond to the specifics of the received message. The Seneschal also announced that new troll forms containing all the waiver language have been made. It will require a number to be printed to be available for upcoming events. Their Excellencies noted many upcoming events are day trip-able, including Coronation. The Chronicler has three individuals who have expressed an interest in taking over around June for three months while she gets to know her new baby.

There was a request from the church regarding use and clean up of the facility.

The meeting adjourned.

Marshallate April Newsletter

March 24th, 2008

Greetings are heartily extended unto Their Excellencies Vatavia and the gentle populace. As I write this and hope it stays warms, I find that I’m drawn to address both winter and spring matters.

First, again, I must offer up thanks to Lord Titus for his help in obtaining the winter site. Many thanks to all of the fighters for supporting our being able to keep it through your financial donations and to the many others who helped with set up and disassembly each week. I’ve made the occasional jest about our new Visiting Fighter Program, with recent drop-ins of Sir Kaidu, His Excellency Shattered Crystal, Lord Bjarni, and Sir Halldor. If you haven’t been to fighter practice lately, you’re missing a lot! We are now back to our usual digs and time: South Linwood Park, 10 o’clock, Sunday mornings.

Many thanks to House Ravenscroft for the generous donation of a gorget to loaner armor; it’s desperately needed. We’ve also accepted a solid gambeson from one of our “retired” former members. Again, thank you.

Renn Fair is rapidly approaching. If none of us have ever said it, we all appreciate the hard work that goes into prepping for Renn Fair as well as the work of the actual weekend. Not a lot of us are public people, and we kind of struggle to find that aspect of ourselves to put on a good show for the public. Thank you for all that takes. The fighters will be following the same protocols as we did during the Fall 2007 fair. Fighters will be authorized in whatever they fight with that day and should be wearing appropriate period attempts at renaissance/medieval clothing (no jeans, blatantly obvious sweats, etc.). For safety reasons, children are not permitted under the fighters’ shadefly. Fighters who haven’t fought in awhile, and even those who have fought quite a bit, should be monitoring gear and weapons. Stuff dries out, and we’d hate to bounce you the morning of Renn Fair. The marshallate, as always, will bring changes to your gear to your attention at practice. If sufficient out-of-town marshals are present, we’ll run authorizations each morning. However, there’s always that possibility they may not be available, which leads me to my next point

Travel
Travel is good. There are many excellent, day-trippable opportunities in the near future for all of us to go out and see the kingdom a bit. It’s a good perspective check; you meet other cool people who share your interests; and you stretch your mind and skills. In March through May alone, in the immediate area, there’s Hibernatus, Equus, Ceilidh, and Melees and Mayhem. Sallyforth and discover what else Calontir has to offer you and yours.

Ever in humble service,
Eleanor

Baronage April Newsletter

March 20th, 2008

Greetings Vatavia,

Once again, Great Plains RenFest is upon us. There’s much preparation to be done. We would like to thank Lord Caudhri and Lady Catlin for stepping forward to autocrat this spring. We would also like to thank those who stepped forward to make boffer swords and other items that we will merchant. As you all know this is our largest demo of the year and everyone is asked to donate some of their time to make this a success. In order for it to be so it takes more than just a handful of people. Please step forward to help.

Not only is this our largest demo, it is also the Barony’s main source of income. Understand, Baronies are self supporting. We don’t receive funding from SCA Inc or the Kingdom, and we cannot charge “baronial memberships”. Occasionally a corporate donation might come our way. I seem to recall a certain mega-retailer with annual sales of $256 billion giving us $50 worth of instant potato flakes. But the bulk of our income is from demo’s such as RenFaire and events, and anyone familiar with the SCA calendar can see there’s already an event nearly every weekend of the year within reasonable travel distance, and it’s very difficult to compete with established annual events. So unless people are willing to form a baronial co-op and donate their time and wares to sit at the farm & art market every weekend from May through October, RenFair and demo’s are our meat and cabbage.

As you read this, We have already woken a large Red Bear from it’s sleep, and are making preparations to travel to Coronation. The following weekend Bois d’Arc hosts Chalice of Equus just a few hours away. Champions, remember you have a tournament to sponsor this summer. It’s not too soon to begin making plans.

In Service to a Great Barony,
Their Excellencies
Thomas & Cerridwyn
